Benefits of Homemade Soup
There are numerous reasons why I like to make “from scratch” homemade soups. Here are just a few reasons why:
- Packed with nutrients by wholesome ingredients – When you make soup at home, you control every carrot, herb, and spice that goes into the pot, giving you a nutrient-dense meal free from unnecessary additives.
- Budget-friendly and perfect for stretching ingredients – You can use pantry staples, leftover veggies, or inexpensive cuts of meat to create a hearty meal that feeds several people without straining your grocery budget.
- Endlessly customizable to your tastes and dietary needs – Whether you prefer low-carb, vegetarian, high-protein, or classic hearty styles, homemade soup lets you adjust flavors, textures, and ingredients exactly how you like them.
- Ideal for meal prep and make-ahead convenience – Soups reheat beautifully and often taste even better the next day as flavors meld, making them an easy go-to for busy weeks.
- Naturally lower in sodium and preservatives – Unlike many canned or packaged soups, homemade versions allow you to season gently and avoid the excess salt and preservatives found in store-bought options.
- Helps with portion control and mindful eating – Soups tend to be filling thanks to their combination of liquid, fiber, and protein, making it easier to enjoy satisfying servings without overeating.
- Freezer-friendly for quick future meals – Making a big batch means you can freeze individual portions for those nights when you want something homemade but don’t feel like cooking.
- A delicious way to add more vegetables to your diet – Soups make it effortless to blend in a variety of veggies, sometimes even ones you don’t normally eat or the kids don’t care for, so you get more vitamins and minerals without thinking twice.
Tips for Making Delicious Soup
- Start with a flavorful base – Whether it’s sautéed onions, garlic, carrots, and celery, or a blend of herbs sizzling in butter or olive oil, taking a few extra minutes to build a strong foundation adds incredible depth to your soup.
- Use quality broth or stock for a richer flavor – Homemade stock is always amazing, but even store-bought can shine when you choose a good brand. A well-seasoned broth elevates the entire recipe and makes every spoonful more satisfying.
- Layer your seasonings and taste often – Instead of adding all the spices at once, sprinkle them throughout the cooking process. Tasting as you go helps you adjust salt, herbs, and acidity so the final result is perfectly balanced.
- Don’t underestimate fresh herbs – A handful of parsley, thyme, cilantro, or dill added at the end brings brightness and life to your soup, transforming it from good to unforgettable.
- Let it simmer low and slow – I think the most important part of making a great soup or stew is giving your soup time to gently bubble, which allows flavors to blend beautifully. Rushing the cooking process can leave ingredients tasting separate rather than harmonious.
- Add vegetables in stages for the best texture – Softer veggies like zucchini or spinach need far less cooking time than root vegetables. Adding them at the right moment keeps everything tender without becoming mushy.
- Use the right cut of meat for tenderness – Tougher cuts like chicken thighs or beef chuck become wonderfully tender when simmered, giving your soup a hearty richness that makes it feel like a full meal.
- Finish creamy soups – So important!! Stir in cream, coconut milk, or blended vegetables at the end over low heat to avoid curdling and keep the texture silky and smooth.
- Don’t forget a final garnish to make it shine – A swirl of olive oil, a sprinkle of cheese, fresh herbs, a dash of pepper, or crunchy croutons can instantly elevate the look and flavor of your bowl.

Low Carb Creamy Italian Soup
When the temperatures drop, there’s nothing more satisfying than a warm bowl of Low Carb Creamy Italian Soup. But so many soups are full of carbs and unhealthy. This healthy, hearty option fits into a low-carb lifestyle and is the perfect recipe to try. It has such a wonderful flavor of using everyday ingredients, low-carb noodles, and a smooth, creamy texture that everyone will love.

Black Eyed Pea & Sausage Soup
A bowl of hot and perfectly seasoned Black Eyed Pea & Sausage Soup with cooked black eye peas and sausage, then served with cornbread, is pure heaven for a winter comfort food dinner. Dried black eye peas are full of wonderful vitamins and fiber and make a really filling meal.

Hearty Hamburger Soup
Hamburger Soup is by far one of the easiest soups to make, and I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love it. Simple ingredients, easy to make, and it’s a good idea to double that recipe since seconds will be asked for by all.

Slow Cooker Chicken Enchilada Soup
If you love the flavor of Mexican food, then you will love this Slow Cooker Chicken Enchilada Soup recipe. It is so cheesy and good! The spicy tomatoes will just put this recipe over the top. For all of us low-carb soup lovers, don’t add the optional black beans!

Instant Pot Pantry Chili
You can’t have a list of soups without having a recipe or two of chili. I love making Instant Pot Pantry Chili, but I also have another chili recipe made another way. Both were made with basically the same ingredients and ended up with that same great chili taste. Serve with either my favorite cornbread recipe and top with sour cream. When I make this chili low-carb, I don’t add all the beans. I love black beans, and a few in your low-carb diet is ok because of all the fiber they have.
