A gentle winter reminder that even in cooler days, caring for our gardens, feeding the birds, and enjoying nature brings simple joy.

As winter settles in, even here in Zone 9 of Central Florida, it’s a beautiful time to slow down, appreciate nature around us, and find little ways to make the season feel meaningful and abundant.
While our winters might not bring snow, they still offer moments of quiet, reflection, and connection with the outdoors. Here are some of my favorite winter inspiration post ideas that help make this season special.

Embrace Winter Gardening with a Floridian Twist
Winter in Central Florida isn’t like the traditional snowy season—but it does bring cooler weather that challenges gardens in its own way. Living in Zone 9 with Cold Weather is all about learning how to grow plants well, even when temperatures dip lower than we’re used to. Knowing your planting zone and frost dates helps you choose the right plants and protect them when chilly nights come.

Some winter tips that keep your garden thriving:
- Water plants before a cold snap to keep the roots hydrated and handle freezing temps better.
- Cover tender pots with towels, old sheets, or cloches during cold nights with freezing temps or heavy frost.
- Save your pruning for spring, as winter-browned leaves help insulate roots.
- Enjoy cold-loving, colorful blooms like pansies and violas as they flourish even in winter’s breeze.
- Winter loving eatable plants are fun to grow, such as kale, greens, spinach, and cabbage. I love growing these in large pots close to the back door to harvest quickly.
Winter gardening doesn’t have to feel like a struggle, but it can be a time to experiment, observe, and connect more deeply with what grows best in your space.

Bring Joy to Your Yard by Feeding the Birds
One of my most peaceful winter rituals is watching birds at the feeders with a warm cup of tea in hand. A Quick Guide to Feeding Birds & My Favorite Feeders shares excellent tips for inviting feathered friends into your yard all winter long.
Here’s how to make your backyard a winter bird haven:
- Keep a variety of feeders from tube feeders for finches to suet cages for woodpeckers.
- Match seeds to the species you want to attract, like black oil sunflower for cardinals and mixed seeds for general visitors.
- Leave feeders up through fall and spring, adjusting types as birds migrate through your area.
Feeding birds does more than fill their bellies; it gives you a reason to slow down, watch, and smile each day. One of my favorite pastimes is in the winter.

DIY Bird Treats: No-Melt Suet for Winter
For a little winter project with a big payoff, homemade suet is a winter favorite. In No Melt Suet and Recipe, I shared how suet is a high-energy treat that helps birds stay warm in cooler weather.
Here are a couple of simple recipes I use:
My Winter Suet Mix
- 1 cup real beef suet
- 1 cup crunchy peanut butter
- 2 cups quick-cook oatmeal
- 2 cups yellow cornmeal
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup sugar
Melt the suet and peanut butter together, stir in the dry ingredients, press into molds, and freeze. Once hardened, hang it outside in a suet feeder and watch the birds flock!
DIY Cookie-Cutter Bird Feeders
No-melt suet cakes are another great option if you live where winter swings toward warm days.
- 2 packs of Knox gelatin
- 1 1/2 to 2 cups of bird seed
- cookie cutters
- wax paper or cellophane or cookie sheet
- scissors
- twine or ribbon
Mix 1/2 cup of boiling water with the Knox gelatin and stir until mixed well. Let it cool just a bit, but not too long. It hardens quickly. Add your birdseed and mix well. Don’t put too much bird seed in the shape that won’t hold. I used a birdseed with a lot of sunflower seeds since I was trying to attract the songbirds. The birdseed with a lot of smaller seeds compacts much better in the cookie cutters, and children have an easier time working with it.

Make Winter Your Favorite Season
Winter may look different depending on where you live, but it always offers a chance to slow down, observe nature, and nurture your surroundings. Whether you’re tending plants that weather cold snaps, watching birds delight at the feeder, or filling suet cages with homemade treats, this season has its own special kind of abundance.
Take a moment to read, reflect, and maybe try one small winter ritual of your own. I’d love for you to share your favorite ways to enjoy the season in the comments or connect with me over on Instagram for more seasonal inspiration.

One of the things I do appreciate about Winter is you can slow down and take time out. We are heading to Spring now and loving the little signs that are showing up
Gardening in the winter is the biggest selling point for me when I think about Florida!
I have a tough time getting through the colder months. These are great tips for helping power through the bad weather. It is really bad up here in Upstate NY!
Feeding the birds and tending to the garden during these colder months brings a peaceful feeling to the backyard. Your advice about waiting to prune those brown leaves is a helpful tip for keeping plants safe.
I wish winter gardening were an option for me; I would have done it in a heartbeat. I love the inspiration, though, thank you so so much.
We always feed more birds in the wintertime! It’s neat to see which ones are out.
This has reminded me I need to fill up our bird feeders. I’m always forgetting to fill them even though we have loads of feed in our shed x
