Turn a charming old vintage tin into a cozy, custom candle with just a few simple materials like wax, a wick, and essential oils. This easy DIY project is perfect for home decor or a thoughtful handmade gift.

There’s something undeniably charming about turning old objects into new treasures, and tea tins are no exception. Their vintage flair and sturdy structure make them perfect vessels for homemade candles. Not only does this DIY project add a cozy glow to your space, but it’s also a great way to recycle and personalize your home decor.
And the best part is that it’s so easy to do and very inexpensive. They make wonderful gifts, especially for those who love vintage items. Tins are really easy to find nowadays, and they don’t have to be old. You can find tins basically anywhere now.

Gather Your Supplies
To start, you’ll need a few basic supplies: an old tea tin (clean and dry), and a candle sand kit. A candle sand kit comes with everything you need. Wicks and all. That’s all you will need.
I find old tins while thrifting, or you can see some really good examples on eBay at reasonable prices.
I did have some shorter wicks that I used for this demonstration.

Let’s get started
Before you start, make sure your tin is thoroughly cleaned. Remove any leftover dirt, rust, or labels that might catch fire. Add the candle sand in your tin and leave about 1 inch at the top.
To add essential oils to candle sand, mix 3–10 drops of oil per cup of sand and mix thoroughly before placing it into your tin.

Add the wick, and you are done! The wick will burn down and only melt a little bit of the candle wax. The candle sand can be used over and over and comes in several colors.

Enjoy or Gift Your Candle
Now your candle is ready to enjoy! It’s ready to light up or tie a ribbon around the tin and give it as a heartfelt, handmade gift. These DIY candles make lovely presents for birthdays, holidays, or just-because moments, and they’re a wonderful way to breathe new life into those pretty old tins you couldn’t bear to toss.

You could use the candle sand in any vessel. I love picking up small vintage glass bowls, old tea cups, cut glass, etc., to make this easy project.
This too-easy-to-make simple candle is perfect for small glass vessels for weddings, showers, or any type of events where there was a lot of tables that need candles. And the candle sand can be used over and over.

This is so neat! I didn’t know you could get candle sand and make a candle just like that. I have some decorative tins I would love to use for this project.
Love this idea!! I am a huge fan of candles yet sometimes I stop myself from using them so they last longer lol. DIYing them at home is something I should have done a long time ago! Definitely adding this to my list of at-home activities to try
Thrifting for those old tins is such a fun way to find unique decor for cheap. Using a candle sand kit makes the whole process way less messy than melting big blocks of wax on the stove.
This is such a great way to upcycle a tin! The tin you picked is so cute as well.
wow! Such a great idea. I need to get some of that candle sand. I would love it if you would join me for my monthly Sharing Serenity link party at https://serenityyou.com/sharing-serenity-the-monthly-link-party/ – Natasha xxx
