Let’s explore ideas and tips to help you create a laundry room that’s both beautiful and practical.

Maximize Your Space

One of the first steps in a laundry room makeover is to look at the space you have. If you’re working with a small area, it’s crucial to make every inch count. Consider vertical storage options like wall-mounted shelves or cabinets to keep supplies organized and off the floor. Installing stackable washers and dryers can free up floor space for a folding station or extra storage. Even in larger laundry rooms, smart space utilization can improve workflow and create a more efficient environment.

  • Remove the clutter
  • Use a functional layout
  • Get as much storage as you can
  • Make use of wall space
  • Label everything
  • Use glass jars for storage to minimize clutter
  • Add extra baskets

Choose the Right Color Palette

The color scheme you choose can have a significant impact on the overall feel of your laundry room. Light paint colors and wallpaper can make a small space feel larger and more open. If you prefer a bolder look, consider adding a pop of color with an accent wall or vibrant cabinetry. I adore the color of the cabinets in the picture above. If you have the light, incorporate some plants to fill up the space.

Incorporate Functional Design Elements

Functionality should be at the forefront of any laundry room makeover. Think about the tasks you perform most often in this space and design around them. A countertop over the washer and dryer provides a convenient spot for folding clothes. Built-in hampers or pull-out baskets can keep dirty laundry sorted and out of sight.

If you are lucky enough to have a window in your laundry, make the most of it by making a reading/sitting area while you wait for laundry to get done.

Add Personal Touches

While a laundry room is primarily a functional space, it doesn’t mean it can’t have a personal touch. Incorporate elements that reflect your style and make the room feel welcoming like family photos. This could be as simple as adding decorative hooks for hanging clothes or installing a chic backsplash behind the sink. Consider adding artwork, a cozy rug, or even plants to bring warmth and character to the space. These personal touches can make the laundry room a more pleasant place to spend time in. Consider Energy Efficiency

In today’s world, energy efficiency is a top priority for many homeowners. When planning your laundry room makeover, consider upgrading to energy-efficient appliances. Modern washers and dryers not only use less water and electricity but also often come with features like steam settings and faster spin cycles that can reduce drying time. Additionally, installing LED lighting and using eco-friendly cleaning products can make your laundry room more sustainable and cost-effective in the long run.

Invest in Quality Materials

Durability is key in a laundry room, where moisture and heavy use are common. Choose materials that can withstand the environment, such as water-resistant flooring and countertops. Quartz, porcelain tile, and vinyl are excellent options for surfaces that need to be both durable and easy to clean. Investing in high-quality materials will ensure that your laundry room not only looks great but also stands the test of time. That sink is just perfect for a laundry room.

Plan for the Future

Finally, when redesigning your laundry room, think about future needs. If your family is growing, you may want to plan for additional storage or space for a larger washer and dryer. Consider adding outlets (something my laundry room doesn’t have except for the w/d) and plumbing that can accommodate future upgrades. Planning ahead will save you time and money down the line and ensure your laundry room remains functional and stylish for years to come.

My Dream Laundry Room

I have a small laundry room that leads out into the garage. One wall is just the wall and the other wall holds the w/d and cabinets. We have 25-year-old appliances that are still working, but not as efficient as they should.

My dream laundry room is to use a stackable washer and dryer since we have 9-foot ceilings in the corner where the dryer sits now. I would reuse the cabinets above our w/d now and put them over the floor cabinets we have at the other end of the small utility room. A new countertop will be extended over the cabinets to where the washer used to be and that would be my office area. ❤️ The picture above is my inspiration.

  1. Thanks a lot Tammy, these are wonderful ideas. Our laundry room is a mess, well, not really a mess but it is so basic and does need a bit of love.

  2. I love a nice laundry, to make me want to spend time there. I had not thought of a desk in there. I do like a piece of artwork on the wall.
