I am so excited to show you my latest DIY/update project. I’ve been wanting to do this for some time now. Actually, for years but I have just been putting off and putting it off.

I adore the color of this cabinet’s wood and didn’t want to change that at all. Plus, this cabinet is really large and 8 feet tall.

Vintage decor is making a huge comeback and can add personality and flair to any room of your home.
history

This is by far my favorite piece in the house. It came from my grandmother’s home after she passed which was a cabinet in Barnes Hospital pharmacy in St. Louis. My grandfather worked there and when they started remodeling, he brought it home.

My mother had it for years and when they moved to Florida, it wouldn’t fit in their home, so it came to me when I lived in Georgia. This cabinet has moved from St. Louis to Florida and has held up so well. They certainly made furniture much better back in the day.

This cabinet also holds a lot of memories and tons of vintage items. You can see my son’s first lunch box he used in kindergarten. I’ve been thinking about painting the back wall white to show off the items displayed better for so long, but just hadn’t taken the plunge yet.

Woods and whites are defiantly my jam.

deciding what to do

I used Pinterest for some time to find inspiration on what to do with my hutch but it was mainly using paint. I realized that I didn’t want to paint my hutch because that is something that’s forever or would take a lot of work to remove in the future.

So, I saw a post about removable wallpaper and decided, that’s what I wanted to do.

Use removable wallpaper on the inside of the cabinet and if I didn’t like it in the future, I would just pull it off without damaging the cabinet.

what color to use

I decided quickly that I wanted to use a light color on the inside of the cabinet to help show off the items in the cabinet. When looking at the cabinet, you had to open the doors to see what was in there.

I also didn’t want to use a patterned wallpaper because there are too many items in the cabinet that would clash with patterns.

So a light color, solid peel-and-stick wallpaper was my choice for this project.

peel and stick wallpaper

I looked at a lot of peel-and-stick wallpaper and finally found the perfect choice. The color is white with just a bit of texture and with over 10,000 reviews, it seemed like a great choice. Score!

You can see the color and texture in the picture above. There are several sizes and colors of this wallpaper.

I measured the area I wanted to wallpaper and only needed two rolls for $8.00 each!

let’s get to it

The first thing I did was take a lot of pictures of each shelf in the cabinet before I started removing all the items in the cabinet.

I then removed all the items on each shelf and placed them in one area. This gave me a chance to clean the items that were dusty. It’s been almost 20 years since I’ve done that.

I then removed all the wooden shelves and cleaned them and placed them in order to the side. The brackets that hold the shelves are handmade and are made to fit each shelf. I didn’t want to mix them up.

As you can see in the picture above, there are several different levels of wood on the back of the cabinet. I only wanted to wallpaper the area in the middle.

Since I was working with level sides, it didn’t take long to put the wallpaper in that area. I was done in a few hours and impressed with how well the wallpaper stuck to the cabinet.

I let the cabinet sit for a couple of nights just to make sure the wallpaper was going to hold up well before I started putting things back.

I absolutely love how it looks! I can now see what’s in the cabinet and really enjoy all the items there now. I love what less than $20 can do to a hutch.
