Here’s how to create a holiday garland that’s as unique as your style with this Vintage Bobbin Christmas Garland tutorial.

If you love crafting, then you will love this quick vintage look Christmas garland. Using old vintage wooden bobbins, colorful beads, and sturdy cord, this DIY Bobbin Christmas Garland is the perfect way to turn them into a charming holiday decoration! It’s perfect to drape this unique garland to add vintage flair to your tree, mantel, or doorway. In my case, I have it draped on my garden bench. Such a lovely personal touch for yourself or as a gift.
I was inspired last year on Pinterest and knew I had to make one myself. I knew this vintage-looking garland would be perfect for my vintage Christmas decor.
Let’s get crafting!

Supplies You’ll Need:
- Wooden spools of thread – I chose vintage spools with threads that were in shades of red & green. You could also find these while thrifting, but eBay was an easier choice for me. There are so many colors to choose from for your taste.
- Vintage wooden spools with no thread – The wooden spools shaped like Christmas trees are perfect for this craft.
- New wooden spools – Even though I am calling this DIY vintage, no one needs to know that you have used new wooden long spools, too. They do look vintage. There are short and long versions of these, but I loved the look and charm of the long spools.
- Round wooden beads – I used the red beads because of how the color looked aged, but there are so many different colors to choose from. The gold ones are so pretty!
- Cord or twine – I chose a thick waxed cord so that it would last being out on the lanai, but there are so many choices out there for cord.
- Scissors

Let’s Get Started
- Lay out your pattern – I have to admit. This took me a while to get the pattern the way I wanted the garland to look. But, after moving around the items, I finally got it laid out like I wanted.
- Cut your garland cord – Decide how long you want your garland to be. A standard mantle or tree garland is anywhere from 4 to 8 feet. Cut your twine or cord slightly longer to leave room for hanging loops at both ends. Tie off one end with a loop knot.
- Thread the bobbins and beads – Start from the beginning of your pattern and slide your bobbins onto the string one by one. If the holes are large, tie small knots or add beads between each bobbin to keep them spaced evenly.
- Finish with a knot and loop – Finish off with the same type of loop knot you did at the beginning of the garland.
- Hang & Enjoy – Drape your garland across a Christmas tree, fireplace mantel, staircase railing, or window frame and admire your handiwork!

Design Variations to Try
- Monochrome Magic – Use all red or all white thread spools for a clean, classic Christmas look.
- Rustic Farmhouse Style – Stick to jute twine, natural wood bobbins, and plaid ribbon.
- Sewing Room Garland – Add tiny scissors, buttons, thimbles, or measuring tape ribbon for a themed garland in your craft space!
If you have any of the items left, you could also make some cute ornaments with them or use them for Christmas gift tags.

Enjoy this lovely vintage-looking garland that is so uniquely yours!
