Bring the cozy essence of autumn indoors with simple DIY fall smells made from natural spices, fruits, and essential oils.

Even though I live in Central Florida and the air doesn’t get really crisp in the fall, so I have to “make” it feel like Fall. And nothing sets the mood quite like the cozy scents of the season. Think cinnamon, apples, cloves, and pumpkin spice drifting through your home that’s inviting, warm, and comforting.

The best part? You don’t need to buy expensive candles or sprays to enjoy these aromas. With a few simple ingredients, you can create DIY fall smells that bring the magic of autumn indoors.

Simmer Pots: A Stove-Top Delight

One of the easiest ways to fill your home with fall fragrance is by making a simmer pot. Simply add water to a small pot and toss in ingredients like:

  • Apple slices
  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Whole cloves
  • Orange peels
  • A splash of vanilla extract

Let it simmer on low, adding more water as needed. The natural blend of fruits and spices will make your home smell like a cozy fall market.

DIY Fall-Scented Candles

Candles are my jam, and if you enjoy crafting, making your own candles is a perfect way to add fall fragrance. Use soy or beeswax and blend in essential oils such as cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, or sweet orange. You can even pour them into mason jars for a rustic fall touch. I love to use vintage tins for my homemade candles.

Homemade Pumpkin Spice Air Freshener

Skip the chemical sprays and try a natural spray version instead. In a small spray bottle, combine:

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons rubbing alcohol or vodka (to help preserve)
  • 10 drops cinnamon essential oil
  • 8 drops clove essential oil
  • 5 drops nutmeg essential oil

Shake well and spritz around your home for an instant autumn boost. These make wonderful gifts.

Fall-Scented Sachets

Sachets are perfect for closets, drawers, or even in your car. Fill small fabric bags with dried orange peel, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and a few drops of essential oil. They’ll release a gentle fall aroma every time you pass by.

Bringing fall scents into your home doesn’t have to be complicated or costly. With a few pantry staples and essential oils, you can create your own DIY autumn ambiance that’s as cozy as a sweater and as comforting as a warm cup of cider. Another great gift idea.

  1. I love simmering the orange slices and adding cinnamon. That has to be one of my favourite scents. I’ve also dried my own orange slices before for decoration.

  2. I do love the idea of a simmer pot. Funny enough it’s actually how I make some of my medicinal teas which I enjoy drinking. I need to get some apples and oranges and give that a try x

  3. I try to stay away from synthetic fragrances as much as possible. These are wonderful ideas for making your home smell cozy and delicious, without the chemicals.

  4. I ♥♥♥ these DIY ideas! My favorite fall scent was Claire Burke’s Apple Jack and Peel, but something about it started making me sneeze (just me not anyone else in the house), so I had to stop using it. I am going to give these a try!
