Lately, I’ve been craving a creative outlet—something relaxing, screen-free, and just a little nostalgic. That’s when I stumbled upon the idea of trying a Paint By Numbers kit, and I’m so glad I did. I used to do these as a kid, and they are back in style and are collectibles if you are a thrifter.

When the weather cools and Christmas is over and packed away, it’s the perfect time for me to enjoy a project out on the lanai. I usually do several puzzles, and when the heat turns up, I pack them all up and wait until the weather cools again.

But this year, I decided to change things up. I was scrolling through Amazon and found the Paint By Number section and found the most perfect landscape to do.

A beautiful countryside scene full of autumn trees, cozy barns, and a white farmhouse bathed in golden light. It instantly drew me in with its charming, peaceful vibe.

Starting this project was like opening a door to a simpler time. I propped up the box to look at the finished project, and the instructions are a big help when you don’t see a number for an area. The outlines and tiny numbers gave me structure, but the act of filling in each section with color felt freeing and meditative. There was no pressure to be “good” at art—just the joy of watching the image slowly come to life, one brushstroke at a time. It was both satisfying and surprisingly therapeutic.

A couple of things I learned about this PBN were that it is very detailed, with a lot of small areas. I needed to purchase a few small paintbrushes for the small areas. I also purchased a paint tray because there are several areas where two colors need to be mixed together. I also, which is described in the instructions, used a thin black marker for some small, detailed black areas. And since I have older eyes, I needed a bit more light at the table, and I don’t have a plug-in close by. So, I used my wireless bottle lamp, which works perfectly there to brighten up the area.

What I love most about this kit is how it turned into a little escape at the end of the day of screen time. I’d put on some music or a podcast, sit down with my paints, and just zone in. It has also been something to do to help me during this time of grieving from the passing of Mr. G. He loved watching the progress of the painting, and it saddens me that he didn’t see the finished project.

As I filled in the bright orange leaves, the bold greens of the pine trees, and the subtle shadows on the farmhouse, I felt a quiet pride growing with each completed section. It’s such a great feeling when a project is growing great.

If you’ve been thinking of trying something new and creative, I highly recommend giving Paint By Numbers a go. It’s beginner-friendly, budget-friendly, and deeply rewarding. Plus, you get a finished piece of art that feels like your own—even if you had a little help from the numbers. No one has to know! 😊
