Visit Your Local Library

It may seem obvious, but your local library is a treasure trove of free reading material. I love reading books and magazines from my local library using the Libby app on my iPad. Libraries aren’t just for physical books anymore. Many offer digital collections you can access from your phone, tablet, or e-reader. All you need is a library card, and you are ready to read using your tablet or phone.

Ask about apps like Libby or Hoopla, which let you borrow eBooks, audiobooks, and magazines for free with your library card. Remember that when using your local library, the same rules apply. You will be “checking out” books, and they will return after the library’s checkout time.

Explore Free Online Resources

There are plenty of websites offering free books and magazines legally. Some favorites include:

  • Project Gutenberg – Over 60,000 classic books in the public domain.
  • Open Library – A digital library with millions of free eBooks to borrow.
  • ManyBooks – Free and discounted eBooks for all kinds of devices.
  • Google Books – Search for books with free previews or full access.
Use Magazine Apps with Free Access

Apps like Flipboard and Pocket curate articles, stories, and magazine-style content from trusted sources. While not always full magazine issues, you can stay informed and entertained without paying for subscriptions.

Check with your library to see if they have access to RBdigital or PressReader, which offer full digital magazines for free.

Check Out Free Trials

Many popular eBook and magazine services offer free trials. Even if only temporarily, it’s a great way to enjoy content for free:

  • Kindle Unlimited – Often offers a 30-day free trial.
  • Apple News+ – Free trial for digital magazines and newspapers.
  • Scribd – Free trial for books, audiobooks, and magazines.

Just remember to cancel before the trial ends if you don’t want to be charged!

Join a Book Swap or Little Free Library

Book swaps, community bookshelves, and Little Free Libraries are fantastic ways to find free books. Simply take a book you’re done with and exchange it for a new one. It’s a budget-friendly and eco-friendly reading option. Our local library will offer a book swap during the summer.

Search for Free eBooks from Publishers

Many publishers and authors offer free eBook downloads as part of promotions or to build their audience. Keep an eye on:

  • Amazon’s Free Kindle eBooks section
  • Author websites and newsletters
  • BookBub, which highlights free and discounted books daily

  1. I haven’t visited the library in a long while. I must pop by soon – as I used to visit a lot when my children were younger. I will also have to check out some apps that have free trials.

  2. These are some great places to read books and magazines. My absolute favorite is scribd as I can download my daughter’s academic books and magazines too.
    Thanks for sharing this list!

  3. I always visit the library. Not necessarily for free books, but a change of scenery since I work from home. It’s sooo refreshing!

  4. I use Flipboard a lot and love it. I have been using it for years and some of the curated magazines are great.

  5. I am a huge fan of Libby! It is good to know that there are so many other ways to read stuff for free. So useful especially when traveling.
