Bringing in Other Means of Income

Bringing in extra streams of income to any household can be easy and quite fun. Let me show you how.

When Mr. G and I married, I stopped working my 9 to 5 job after many years because I moved to his home state of Georgia. We knew he was retiring in a couple of years and we would be moving to Florida and I didn’t want to start another job and then have to leave it.

But, I also knew that I didn’t want to just sit around the house all day while he worked. Since I was really interested in online work back in 2002, I decided to do some research and find out what was out there that I could do.

Having multiple streams of income coming in is a great way to have extra money to save for vacations, updating your home, education, etc. I have noticed over the years, when one stream isn’t producing well, another one will produce and take its place with income. Even though the money coming in maybe small from each venture, it adds up throughout the year.

Another great advantage of working from home are the great tax breaks you can claim at the end of the year. I wrote a post on how to prepare for tax season if you make money online. Office in the home is another great way to get deductions at the end of the year.

eBay

My first online adventure with making money was selling and buying on eBay. At this time, eBay was only a few years old and a lot easier to use. I would buy items in lots and then sell them in pieces. This worked out so well!! I’m still a buyer and seller today. Mr. G wanted to sell off his sports card collection, so we began doing that during the shutdown.

eBay is a great place to make money. Its still pretty basic to use as it was when I started back in 2002. You do supply your own packaging and I go through eBay for cheaper shipping options.

What can you sell on eBay? Basically anything! Go through your house and sell collections, collectables, clothes, furniture, go to estate sales, consignment stores, etc. Check out the attic. There may be a treasure or two there to sell.

Blogging or Website

I started my first website selling dog biscuits online in 2003. It was hosted by GeoCities and I set up shop there. Lets just say that didn’t go as well as I wanted to. But, I learned about websites and went on to the next step.

My next website I made was through Blogger. It was my first try with blogging and I really enjoyed that. At that time, there were no affiliates or ads to put on the site. So, it was just for fun. After a while, I was approached by companies to add links to my website. But it was mainly small products sent to me and I would review them.

After we moved to Florida in 2005, I really buckled down and decided if I was going to make money on my website, I needed a better format and I started a WordPress website with a store on the side. I made hair bows for little girls and that really took off. I was really busy with making and selling hair bows for a few years and also blogging. I learned about Google ads and started that on my website.

When the bow business stopped, my blogging had improved to the point where companies were contacting me to work with them. This was about 2010, so collaborating was just starting. I really loved this part of my work. Not only did I get great products to try and keep but also got paid for doing it.

Fast forward to today and my extra income comes from affiliate links, Google ads on my website and collaborations. I will say this. Working with companies doesn’t happen over night. Get your name out there with either social media or just by contacting them. Local stores love to have their items on social media.

I have a ton more information on my blogging resources page to learn more about starting your own website.

ecommerce

As stated above, I made and sold hair bows to little girls and also bows for cheering competitions which did very well. Are you talented in one area where you can make and sell items? There are several websites out there to sell your wares. Etsy is the largest website that comes to mind. I have family who sells there and does very well.

If you are very creative in making graphics, try Society 6. Your graphic designs are put on items like clothing, cups, blankets, etc. You don’t have to keep any inventory in your home, just upload your graphics to different types of products. You will automatically see what your artwork looks like on them. I’ve been using them for a couple years now and sell items mainly during the holidays.

reward style/Liketoknow

I’ve only been with Reward Style, which is now LikeToKnow, now for about 2 years and quickly started doing well with them. You can use their links on your website and social media. I love making collage-style posts on Instagram which will take them to my LikeToKnow profile where they can see all the times in the collage. If you are a beauty or style person, you must give them a try. I love showing off items that I use and enjoy.

social media

Income from social media has only happened in the past few years or so. Mainly because more and more retailers are using social media to get their products out there. And now that Instagram doesn’t require 10,000 followers to have the coveted “link” option, anyone can start making money. Affiliate links can be used on YouTube, Twitter and Facebook also.

Amazon

I’ve been an Amazon affiliate for many years now and really love it. Its really easy to put links on blog posts and social media. The best part about an Amazon affiliate link is that if someone clicks on the link, but doesn’t buy that product, you still get credit for whatever they do buy. To me, they have the best way to earn income compared to some of the others. The Amazon affiliate program is easy to join and the possibilities are endless with them. You can sign up HERE.

Amazon Selling Central

I’ve been selling books on Amazon for a few months now and this has been a great way to make some extra income. You don’t just have to sell books. If you go to Amazon, you know what I mean. I get my inventory from consignment stores, library sales, thrift stores, etc. I also sell and ship my products, instead of shipping my books to Amazon and letting them do all the work for me. If I was a huge seller, I would use their services, but I would prefer to keep those fees in my pocket. I also use the Individual Selling Plan and pay $.99 per sale instead of a monthly fee. Again, if I was a larger seller, I would use their Professional Selling Plan. You can sign up HERE.

I recently cleaned out my closed, I thought about selling my clothes on eBay and then remembered Poshmark. They are SUPER easy to use. Take pictures of your items, place them online with a description and price. Once the items sells, Poshmark sends you the shipping label to print out and just ship the product. If you have a closet full of clothes, shoes, etc. that are in great shape, here is a great way to do it. You can also sell select home items, select pet items and select electronics. I have found some great deals on that site too. And don’t forget all the kids clothes you can sell too!

And you never know. It may come to the point that you can make a full time living from your online success.
