Creating DIY bottle brush tree decor is an easy and festive project that adds charm to your holiday decorations.
Sometimes you find something like a doorknob at a vintage store, a yard sale, or a thrift shop and you have no idea what to do with it.
If you have any of these, get ready. Do I have a cute little easy project to make with them? These mini trees bring a touch of whimsy and are perfect for small spaces or as thoughtful handmade gifts for the holidays.
Not only have I found doorknobs while thrifting, but I also found several old bottle brush trees. So many people get rid of their Christmas decor at Goodwill too. Department 56 has really nice bottlebrush trees I have found in thrift stores.
Here’s the best part?
IT TOOK LESS THAN 10 MINUTES TO MAKE!
It’s so easy. So, let’s get to it!
items you need
- any size bottle brushes
- wooden alphabet blocks
- wooden thread spools
- hot glue
I’m looking for vintage thread spools to try next year. The alphabet blocks are vintage, but you could use some from Walmart.
Start with the knob
You can find knobs like this at yard sales, thrift stores, antique shops or yard sales.
The only challenge with attaching the tree to the knob is the metal rod in the center. Not all knobs have the rod. Some of the knobs I found didn’t have rods which made the job even easier.
Use a hacksaw to saw the rod off or some will screw off but maybe a bit hard.
In the picture above you can see what the doorknob looked like after the center rod was removed. It looks like it was made for this project and is a perfect surface for a tree.
Hot glue to the tree
Add some hot glue in the hole and around the edge at the top of the doorknob. Then press the wood slice on the bottom of the tree in place.
If you don’t like the wooden stand under the tree, clip it off with wire cutters or screw it off. Then add some glue in the hole of the doorknob and wait until it’s just about set to slip the wire down into the hole of the doorknob to hold it up straight.
That’s it. Since the knob is rather heavy, you could use much larger bottle brush trees with them.
Aren’t the ones on old alphabet blocks so cute? I haven’t had any trouble finding old alpha blocks in thrift stores. Simply add a few drops of glue to the wooden stand on the tree and place it on top of the block.
What I love so much about this easy little project is you could create this craft with something YOU MAY HAVE AROUND THE HOUSE RIGHT NOW. I saw one using a vintage mini aluminum bundt mold turned upside down and the tree was on top. There are so many ideas for this project. Mini mason jars are another one.
I’ve found a few bottle brush trees at thrift stores. The one above that has the little colored glass balls is from the 1960s and was one of those $1 finds.
I will sit them around my Putz houses, which are my latest vintage holiday collection. They are made from cardboard and glitter from back in the 1950s. Make sure it says “made in Japan” on the bottom, or it’s not a Putz house.
