Maintaining happiness in your 60s is a wonderful goal that can significantly enhance your quality of life. Here are some of the products I use and love daily.
I had such a great response and questions about my post on being happy in my 60s, I just wanted to thank all of you who sent them to me, Since I had so many questions about what products I use, I decided to make a post on that subject alone.
Entering your 60s can be a liberating and exciting time of life. It’s a period where you have accumulated wisdom, experiences, and perhaps a newfound sense of freedom. However, maintaining happiness and well-being during this stage requires intentional choices, including the products you use in your daily life. In this blog post, I’ll share some of my favorite products that have helped me embrace happiness and thrive in my 60s.
Navigating your 60s can be a fulfilling journey with the right mindset and support systems in place. By incorporating products that prioritize health, wellness, and happiness into your daily routine, you can embrace this stage of life with vitality and enthusiasm. Remember to listen to your body, stay connected with loved ones, and prioritize self-care as you embark on this new chapter.
You don’t wear the same clothing you did 20 years ago or style your hair the way you did decades ago, so why should your skincare routine be stuck in the past? While a few old favorites might still have a place in your beauty arsenal, don’t be afraid to give most of them the boot. Mature skin has unique needs, and it deserves to be treated properly.
As you get older, skin and hair tend to become thinner, duller, and less even. You might also have fine lines, deep wrinkles, or age spots. And of course, dryness is a major issue.
Let’s Start with the Hair
As we age, our hair will go gray. Some more than others. My grandmother hardly had any gray hair in her 80s, but here I am with a head full of gray hair. I think that came from my dad’s side of the family. 😉
I was so guilty of not letting nature take its course by letting my hair gray naturally and coloring my hair for 20 years. Growing up in a beauty shop, you see that everyone wanted to stay young with no gray hair. Letting my hair go gray was the best thing I ever did for me!
Gray hair is more brittle and dry. It can be more frizzy and curly or really nice and straight. Either way, gray hair can turn yellow from sweat or makeup we use daily. Using a purple shampoo will clean your hair to strip all that yellow from it. The Matrix Total Results So Silver was recommended by my stylist and it works wonderfully. The packaging has changed since I bought the bottle shown above. I also use Arvazallia Hydrating Argan Oil Hair Mask and Deep Conditioner to soften my course hair. I leave it on for about 5 minutes and then rinse.
Lotions and Potions
As with most things in life, the foundation that no one really sees is the most important part of preserving the largest organ of our bodies.
Our skin. When it’s young, it’s full of moisture and collagen and looks wonderful. But, as time goes by, it begins to sag, dry up, and crepe. 😝
I had a terrible skin reaction when I was 21 and it looked like a bad case of poison ivy. Thank goodness my family doctor checked to see if I was pregnant before he gave me meds. I honestly wondered if my skin reacted to being pregnant. After that, my skin was really dry, and my dermatologist recommended Lubriderm lotion. I have been a faithful user for over 40 years. It’s a nice clean lotion I use every day. I keep small travel bottles filled with Lubriderm and keep one in my office, at my bedside, in the car, and by the chair I sit in the most in the living room.
As the ’60s rolled around, my dermatologist recommended using AmLactin and Gold Bond Age Renew Crepe Corrector Body Lotion. Both of these are great for really dry skin and/or rough dry spots. These lotions do wonders on my dry legs. Use them right after you take a shower when your skin is moist and warm.
It’s Face Time
My daily morning routine consists of cleaning my face with Bioderma water on cotton pads. It’s gentle on the skin, fragrance-free, and alcohol-free. It’s perfect to use before your makeup or your nighttime routine. I do exfoliate my skin every time I take a shower by wearing a glove. It does help to keep my skin smoother. Don’t forget those elbows and knees.
If I’m not wearing any makeup that day, I use Burt’s Bees Sunscreen Moisturizer with 20 SPF. If you take anything from today, it is to use SPF all your life. It will make a difference when you get older. I also use EltaMD UV Physical Tinted Face Sunscreen or EltaMD UV Clear Face Sunscreen if I’m going to the beach where the sun is intense even with a hat on. Both of these are recommended by my dermatologist.
Now for the Pretty Stuff
When it comes to makeup, I’m a very simple girl with this. I don’t like really heavy makeup and with the humidity and the way I sweat here in Florida, that isn’t a good idea. Heavy makeup also shows every wrinkle and crease earned as we age.
I use Covergirl Clean Matte BB Cream in the summer and Colorescience Total Protection in the winter months. I apply my foundation with a Kabuki brush for flawless coverage. This brush is absolutely amazing!
I fill in my eyebrows with Covergirl Eyebrow pencil and keep the hair in place with a Covergirl gel wand. I also use Thrive eyebrow tint to add a bit more color. Tarte Shape Tape is the only concealer I have found that really does cover the dark circles I have acquired from getting older.
My all-time favorite eye color is Thrive Waterproof Eyeshadow stick. It goes on so smoothly and even the heat or water doesn’t bother it. I now only use tubing mascara since it comes off nicely and really makes what lashes I have left from getting old, really beautiful and long. My favs are Thrive Liquid Lash Extension Mascara and Boots No 7 Stay Perfect Mascara. I will leave the house most of the time with just the eye shadow and mascara on.
When it comes to lips, I really like simple. I recently found ETUDE Fixing Tint High Pigmented Liquid Lipstick that lasts a long time and is not heavy. BUXOM Plump Shot Collagen-Infused Lip Serum is what I wear basically every day. I love that tingle and it comes in several shades. Does it pump up my lips? Maybe a little but the tingle does make my pale natural lip color darker. And I do love that!
Before Bed
I use the simplest cleanser that I can find to not dry out my face. So, I normally use CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser to take off makeup and use the Bioderma water any other time. I then message on my skin 4 drops of TruSkin Vitamin C serum, 3 drops of Cocokind Ceramide Barrier Serum, and then 3 drops of ASTERWOOD Matrixyl 3000 on my face and neck. When I started this procedure about a year ago, I really noticed a difference in my skin. A lot of the age spots and freckles were disappearing.
I also use Viebeauti Eyebrow Growth Serum and VieBeauti Premium Eyelash Growth Serum. Folks, this stuff works. You can finally see eyelashes now without mascara!! And I want to keep the brows I have. I tried a couple of other products but always came back to these two. It does take a long time for you to see the results.
I forgot to add the LANEIGE Lip Sleeping Mask in the picture above, I use right before I went to bed. It really does make my lips feel nice when I wake up in the morning. Perfect for cold nights.
And that’s pretty much it for products I use on my skin. I will also add that I have been using a prescription strength retinol when I started going through menopause. My face broke out so badly that retinol worked to keep it under control. Has it helped with wrinkles? I can’t say. But I think wearing sunscreen and hats while I’m outdoors for 40-plus years has helped the most. Make that a habit!
Here’s to living your best life in your 60s and beyond!
most importantly
- Drink lots of water every day – Especially when you wake up in the morning since your body has been deprived of water for 8 hours or more. If you are worried about your water, use a good filter pitcher. I love the Brita pitcher for my water.
- Make SPF your best friend – I was a sun worshiper back in the day and my skin is now paying for it. Thankfully, I wore large-brim hats and word sunscreen on my face when I was outside for most of my adult life and my facial skin shows it with little damage. My arms and legs are paying for all the sun damage now and I’ve had a few areas removed because of skin cancer. My dermatologist recommends EltaMD for sunscreen products and they work wonderfully.
- Keep your brain active – Do what makes your brain active any way you can. So many studies have shown that an inactive brain ages quicker. Enjoy being with friends and not being alone often.
- Live life to your fullest – Just have fun!! But also think about the consequences down the road and what your life choices may hold. Enjoy the aging process at every step. 💕
