Just Some Ramblings & More!

I’ve been told I love to ramble on, so why not pass along some of my ramblings from this past month to all of you!

Welcome to My Life Abundant, a collection of ideas, tips, and inspiration. I love to share everything happening in my abundant life and the inspiration I have found from others around the World Wide Web.

It’s story time.

You see, I’ve been wearing glasses since I was a year and a half. That would be over 66 years now. I also have lived with very nearsightedness all that time. Which meant, I couldn’t live without my glasses. At all!

As time passed, the wonderful world of contacts came along and I started wearing them at the age of 17. What a blessing those were. They were the hard version, but I didn’t have to wear my glasses anymore. I loved them.

More time passed and semihard contacts came along and those were so comfortable compared to the hard version. My prescription was too bad for soft lenses or laser surgery. I wore contacts until about the age of 55. But, my eyes with age, were scared from all the years of wearing contacts and very uncomfortable. So, I started wearing my glasses again.

But, as time went by, I noticed my vision wasn’t as good as it was and after a few years, my eye doctor told me that cataracts were forming. Hallelujah!!! That meant I could have much better vision and be able to wear normal-thickness of lens in my glasses. They could only get my vision down to 20/40 and 20/50 but I could see faces clearly for the very first time in my life!! I could see without my glasses to get around if need be.

Again, as time passed, I noticed my vision was getting bad again. Because of my very nearsightedness, the gel inside my eye was pulling away from the walls. This is a normal aging process for some people. That’s what causes floaters. Large cloud-like floaters. Big black blob floaters. My optometrist said it was time to see a retinal specialist.

I went back to the place where I had my cataract surgery and was told by my new doctor, whom I love, that he could replace the gel in my eyes BUT, here it comes, my retina is scared badly. BUT, he could go in and scrape off the scaring and my vision would be much better. Ok. But that means you will put a needle inside my eye!! But, I was ready to see. I was willing to do the procedure and was told that its basically as easy as cataract surgery. I will be the judge of that.

That surgery day came a few days ago. I was ready. I knew they would give me some good drugs (valium) to help me relax because I had to be awake during the surgery. When he started the procedure, I could see EVERYTHING he was doing inside of my eye. It was incredible and very interesting at the same time. I could see him peeling off the scaring. He removed my old gel, which is called a vitrectomy, and replaced it with some new gel.

The surgery went very well. It’s been a week now and I can see very well. All the giant floaters are gone and my vision is so clear. It will be a full month before all my vision has come back. But I’m so happy with what I am seeing now.

I will have the right eye done later. It’s not as bad as the left eye was and my retina is in great condition.

I am so grateful and blessed to have had this procedure done. My eyes have been an issue all my life. And I will keep doing what I need to do to see until the good Lord says it’s time.

⭐ FUN AND INTERESTING FACTS: What is the fear of long words called? Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia. The 36-letter word was first used by the Roman poet Horace in the first century BCE to criticize those writers with an unreasonable penchant for long words. I can relate!

What I’m watching, reading & listening to

🎥 Watched a cold case about a 6-year-old little boy who was found in the woods in the Atlanta area. Twenty years later, the story was solved. You can read about it here or watch the story on Killer Cases on A & E. This one made my heart hurt. 😢

🎥 Are you an Elvis fan? If you are, you know the anniversary of his death is coming up on August 16th. I plan to watch Elvis Presley: Aloha from Hawaii Via Satellite on Amazon Prime. The last time I saw this was when it came out in 1973. At that time, over 1 billion people all over the world watched that show sent out via satellite which had never been done before. Even though I love his ’68 Special, the Hawaii show was his best.

📖 I decided to read a series this summer and decided on John Grisham. I started with A Time to Kill which came out in 1989 and I could NOT put that book down. The movie was great too, but the book was so much better. The next book I am reading in the Jake Brigance series is Sycamore Row. It’s so good too. I love the way Grisham describes everything with so much detail. There are 2 more in this series. Want to read his books in series order? Check out this site for the list.

📢 This time of the year there is nothing “new” to watch. So, I am rewatching some of my favorites—Army Wives, Downton Abbey, CSI, Friends, etc. I would love to hear your suggestions for something to watch.

Let me know your favorite show, music, or movie you have watched or listened to lately. I’m always looking for new viewing pleasures.

  1. I’m so glad your surgery went well and you’re already seeing better. Sight is such a scary thing when it starts to really get bad!

  2. Love your childhood pic and glad your eye condition is better now ❤️. Keep sharing these delightful snippets with us! By the way, I am currently watching ‘Miss Day & Night’ Korean drama and highly recommend it.

  3. Thank you so much for sharing, you’re such a trooper! I am so glad the operation went well, this is awesome…You’ve been through a lot, I am glad this will be over soon.

  4. I have had glasses since 13 and really cannot see without them! I am not brave enough for contacts (cannot poke myself in the eye) and am not sure if I would do well with surgery either.

  5. What an incredible journey with your vision! From glasses as a toddler to the advent of contacts and then back to glasses, it’s amazing how technology has evolved. Despite the challenges, it’s wonderful to hear about the improvements cataract surgery brought.
