My husband and I have been trying to figure out how to save money in our home and since we have a 5 year old home, there are still things we can do. And every penny counts now a days for sure and we live on a budget. An Energy saving plan is very important to us right now.
I recently went to Microsoft Hohm to find out what I can do to save energy in my home. I was very surprised at the ease of using this website. Its free and all you have to do is start up an account. After this, you fill out everything that pertains to your home. How old appliances are, the structure of your home, insulation, your windows and other basic home information. After you finish the survey and you need to do the advanced survey to make sure you insert all the information about your home, you will receive an energy report to let you know how you can save energy and money in your home.
Our home energy report showed me quite a few things I could do to save us a few hundred dollars a year!! Of course living in Florida our biggest energy usage is our air conditioning costs. And one way to save in our home is to put a programmable thermostat. This would save us about $200 a year. I’m all for that for sure. The website has a video tutorial to show you how to do it yourself and saving money without paying a repairman.
Another thing we can do is to change out the rest of our bulbs with the compact fluorescents. I have changed out many of them but not all of the ceiling lights yet. We are waiting for them to burn out first. I hate to waste anything and I don’t want to throw out good bulbs yet. By doing this through out our home we could save another $200! That is an average of $400 we could save in a year or about $34.00 a month. I can live with that too!!
I know one big energy user in homes are the home appliances you have. The older the appliance, the harder it works. Our refrigerator is starting to make some serious noises and I’m wondering if its over working to keep up. My next one will be energy efficient for sure.
Take 10 minutes out of your day and go to www.microsoft-hohm.com to see how much you can save in your home.
