I love my kitchen. Its laid out perfectly in where I can get the sink, stove and fridge in a triangle fashion. Do wish I had an isle right in the middle. Coming soon, I hope.
My kitchen, kitchen nook and living area is one big room and all the same dark gold color. I have a lot of red, black and dark green in my kitchen. We love roosters!! So, I was ready for a little bit more color in the kitchen and the easiest way to do that is with paint!!
Since the back splash behind my stove has ending points on all 4 sides, (makes for cleaner lines when painting with a bold color), I choose that area to start. Plus, it won’t take much paint. Always looking for a way to decorate without costing a boat load of money and paint has gone up quite a bit in the past 3 years.
Since I decided on a dark barn red shade, I knew I needed to put a dark primer on the wall. We had a dark gray primer from a past paint job which also kept the cost down.
I did let the primer dry over night because the humidity was so high that weekend and satin paint doesn’t like to dry very fast in those conditions.
The next day I put a coat of the red paint on and realized I was going to need at least 1 or 2 more coats. Which is very normal when painting with dark and bold colors.
Letting each coat dry over night, I couldn’t have been happier with the results. Even hubby loved it. He was afraid the red would be too bold for that area. I did end up putting 3 coats of paint on that area. Something to think about if you do decide to use satin dark colors.
I changed out the lamp’s shade to a red one I got at Target for a great price. The old one had a rooster print on it and after 10 years, it was time for a change. Also, at Christmas, I can change out the rooster plate for a Christmas plate.
The whole project cost me less than $10.00 because I only bought a quart of paint. But, if you have to buy primer, the cost will run you more.
Need lighting under your cabinets but don’t want to pay so much for them. I will tell you how you can get them for free in a later post!
I’m just a country girl loving my geeky life with my wonderful husband, always taking pictures, getting my hands dirty in the garden, being crafty, exploring with travels and enjoying all this on a budget. But above all, living my faith as a child of God!
