Blog Prompt – Do you have a house plant that you really love growing? Is there a plant you would love to have? Or do you have a “brown thumb”?
I love having house plants and being in Florida and having a couple of nice windows, my plants grow extremely well here. My corn plant is so tall I had to find a new place for it. And girls, if you have problems growing a plant, the corn plant is an easy one to work with. It doesn’t have a large root system and doesn’t need lots of light. I just water it and give it some house plant food every once in awhile and its about 6 foot tall now. It was just a baby a couple of years ago.
My favorite house plant is the African Violet. I’ve heard people say they are hard to grow. They do require a couple of things, but if you follow those rules you will have great success.
All you need is a window that faces south or east and if its a kitchen window, that’s even better. They love humidity. They grow and stay in their little 4 inch pots, bloom all the time and are easy to propagate from their leaves. That’s the only way I grow new plants. It’s cheap and if it dies, then you didn’t loose much. You can also exchange leaves with family and friends. I have about 20 different varieties now and they sit on my lanai.
The varieties are endless and the colors of the flowers are beautiful. I am growing one now from leaves that the bloom is lime green and a touch of pink. I can’t wait to see how that one will look. The picture to the left shows how the bloom will look.
Grab one from the local store and experiment. They sure a joy to look at in the winter time when its cold and dreary and you have beautiful blooms sitting in your kitchen window.
